Treatment of wrinkles with botulinum

<< Back

Facial expressions are the main cause of the formation of face wrinkles. The continuous movements of the facial muscles cause skin contraction and relaxation. Over the years, permanent wrinkles are developed on the skin and some of the muscles do not relax completely. As a result, the face is filled with visible wrinkles while the eyebrows may remain contracted resulting in a frowned appearance. The treatment with botulinum toxin (Botox®)  reduces the facial wrinkles and restores the former youthful, bright, and vital look. The botulinum toxin blocks the transmission of nerve impulses from nerves to muscles and for this reason the latter cannot be contracted. The reduction of the movements of facial expression muscles makes the facial wrinkles appear less visible and makes the skin look tenser and smoother. This way, the wrinkles of the forehead and those around the eyes can be reduced, and the eyebrows can be lifted and curved.

This procedure does not require any special preliminary preparation. It is performed under the ambulatory regime without anesthesia and as an average lasts 20 minutes. The treatment involves the injection of botulinum toxin under the skin of the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes. The application of a very thin needle makes the procedure almost painless. During the session you will be asked to contract the muscles of facial expressions to underline the wrinkles which shall be treated. After the injection, it is not necessary to apply further treatments or bandages on the face and the person can immediately resume their normal everyday life. After treatment, the skin on the areas where the drug has been injected may remain reddish for a few minutes or, in particular cases, a small dark spot (hematoma) may develop and then disappear within a few days. Women can wear makeup just 10 - 20 minutes after the injection, while it is recommended to wait 10 days before direct sun exposure. In some cases, a second session after 10 - 14 days could be necessary to reshape some small wrinkles that might remain after the first treatment. The botulinum effect is not permanent. It begins to be gradually visible after 4 - 5 days, reaching its maximum after one month and lasts an average of 4 - 8 months, depending on the applied material and the characteristics of each individual person. Normally and if considered as appropriate, the Botox® treatment can be applied twice a year without risks of complications in the facial muscles. It should be noted that botulinum can only reduce those wrinkles caused by the contraction of the facial expression muscles, and not those developed due to skin aging, or the very deep wrinkles. In such cases, the botulinum may be combined with surgical interventions such as lifting and blepharoplasty, or other cosmetic treatments such as wrinkles fill with hyaluronic acid, peeling – laser skin resurfacing, photo - rejuvenation with Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), etc.

The botulinum injection usually has no side effects on the organism. In rare cases, some people may experience dizziness or headaches that disappear within a short time. Other side effects include sagging of the lower eyelids, weakness of the treated muscles, and lachrymation in cases of treatment around the eyes. It should be noted that the immune system can react by producing antibodies that recognize and neutralize the botulinum toxin, thus eliminating its effect. Allergic reactions are rare and botulinum is not recommended to pregnant women or people with neuromuscular problems. The facial treatment with botulinum can be performed at any age, in cases of a real medical - aesthetic indication.
