Breast implants have been applied since 1962. They are composed of an outer casing filled inside with silicone gel or physiological water. The materials used for their production are inert, non - allergenic, non - carcinogenic, non - irritating to the body tissues, resistant to mechanical stress, and impermeable by body fluids. Depending on the structure of the female body and aesthetic needs, implants vary in terms of shape, size, and casing which may be smooth or textured (see also “Augmentation Mastoplasty”). The silicone gel has a viscosity very much similar to that of human fat; therefore, the application of these breast implants guarantees a natural shape and tactile consistency. The physiological water cannot be compressed and for this reason the breasts implanted with such prostheses will seem to be hard and not natural to the touch. Implants of the latest generation applied nowadays are filled with highly compressed silicone gel (compared to previous implants whose gel was more liquid). Due to the above, even in those very rare cases of prosthesis rupture (e. g. due to an accident), the risk of spillage of the silicone gel out of its wrapper and its dispersal in breast tissues is reduced to the maximum. Due to the progress of science and technology in these 50 years of history of augmentation mastoplasty interventions, the durability span of modern prostheses is much longer when compared to that of previous generations of implants. Theoretically, the high quality silicone implants (here we refer to prestigious brands such as ALLERGAN®, MENTOR®, SILIMED®, EUROSILICONE®, etc.) are lifelong, but in general the producing companies offer a minimum guarantee of 10 to 15 years.
Although very rare, it should be noted that the main complicationsrelated to the application of silicone prostheses are as follows:
- capsular contracture (hardening of the tissues surrounding the implant), mainly associated by discomfort or also pain in rare cases;
- slight changes of sensitivity of the nipples area, especially during the immediate post-surgery period;
- rupture and shrinkage of the physiological water prostheses;
- asymptomatic rupture (without any noticeable discomfort) of the silicone gel prostheses.
According to a study cited by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, the percentage of accidentally ruptured prostheses (produced by MENTOR®) is very small, from 0 to 0.6%, depending on the type of surgery performed. The silicone, an inorganic polymer, is one of the most common elements on earth. It can be found almost anywhere, in lubricants, adhesives, hair conditioners, medicines, cosmetic products, etc. A recent study cited by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has concluded that breast implants silicone does not cause toxic or immunological reactions. The occurrence of immunological diseases among women who have been applied silicone implants is equal to that of the general population. The diagnosis of a broken prosthesis can be performed through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the prosthesis can be replaced. In these very rare cases, KEIT® is committed to perform the prosthesis replacement surgery AT NO ADDITIONAL COST FOR YOU.
In order to provide comprehensive answers to certainpublic concerns about the safety of implants and breast enlargement surgery, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) has officially announced the conclusions of studies conducted in this field (click here for more information):
- Breast implants do not increase the risk of breast cancer. However, as recommended for the entire female population, those who decide to have this type of surgery must undergo periodic checkups such as breast self-exam, mammography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.
- Breast implants do not weaken the immune system.
- Women who have been implanted breast prostheses can breastfeed in complete safety
IT SHOULD BE EMPHASIZED THAT IT IS NOT AT ALL TRUE THAT BREAST IMPLANTS ARE AT RISK OF BURSTING DURING AIR TRAVEL;
THIS IS JUST AN URBAN LEGEND!!!
Since the health of each of you is at the center of our attention more than anything else, KEIT® applies only very high quality prostheses of the prestigious American brands MENTOR® and ALLERGAN®.
